PLOVER, WI – The CWRA Stars to Legends Tour as presented by Smiley’s Old Time Diner produced two new winners in the Albert Getzloff Memorial race at Golden Sands Speedway, Plover, WI., as veteran Eugene Gregorich Jr., Amherst, Junction, and Rookie contender, Harley Jankowski, Sparta, WI., raced to exciting wins in the two 30 lap Feature events.
Travis Volm, Mosinee, WI., jumped out to an early lead in the first 30 lap Feature with Jesse Pokszyk, Friendship, WI., and Mike Sievers, Wis. Rapids, WI., battling behind. Jeff Weinfurter quickly moved up to challenge those two, moving into 3rd by the 4th lap. Two quick cautions slowed action but when racing resumed it was Volm opening up a slight cushion over the field. Weinfurter up to 2nd, had a battle on his hands from Darek Gress, Neillsville, WI., who was challenging on the outside. Gress grabbed the spot and set out for Volm who was still in front. Eugene Gregorich, Jr., in his first CWRA start was moving quickly through the field from his 18th starting spot as a result of his Putch Bentley Trucking, $100 fast time honor, grabbing 3rd spot by the halfway point of the race. Another slowdown bunched the field and on the restart it became a 3 car battle for the lead. In a nifty three wide pass, Gregorich, Jr., swooped by both Volm and Gress to take the lead with 5 laps remaining in the race. That’s where he would finish, taking the win by 5 car lengths over, Volm, D. Gress, Mark Mackesy, Wausau, WI., Andreww Morrissey, Deerfield, WI., and Sievers, in one of his best runs to date.
The 2nd 30 lap Getzloff Memorial main saw Monte Gress, Neillsville, WI., from his front row starting position taking the early lead. A quick caution involving 3 cars made for a complete restart. Another caution found the 27 car field slowed, as Steven Lichtfeld, Pardeeville, WI., spun. Finally on the 3rd try the race went green, with M. Gress in front. Jeff Weinfurter who was slowed by a flat tire in the first 30 lapper, moved into 2nd to challenge Gress. Gress maintained his position leading through the half-way point but Harley Jankowski appeared to have the hot set up for the race, moving up to 3rd from his 9th starting spot. Another caution bunched the field and with the ensuing, choose your lane, double file restart, Jankowski found himself next to Gress for the restart. The two battled side by side for 6 laps with neither able to gain an advantage. Jankowski took the point, but one last caution slowing incident found Gress able to sneak inside Jankowski taking a shot at the lead. The two again raced side by side with Jankowski making the outside lane work just a bit better in inching in front of Gress with one lap to go a lead he would hold to the finish. Following Jankowski, who scored his first ever CWRA Feature win in his initial appearance at the track, and Gress, were Weinfurter, Pokszyk, Steven Lichtfeld, and another Rookie contender, Mitch Stankowski, Wausau, WI., in 6th. A field of 27 CWRA race cars as witnessed by a great crowd attending, were on hand for the event, and the majority of them will be at the next Tour race at State Park Speedway, Wausau, WI., Thursday, June 27th, for the Dave Lashua Memorial race.
